Dr Syakantu

Dr. Gardner Syakantu is the founding DeanofSchool of Medicine and Clinical Sciences at LMMU. He has work experience spanning over 20 years where he has held positions ranging from consultant surgeon at the University Teaching Hospital, Provincial Health Director for Southern Province to Director Clinical Care and Diagnostic Services and Director Mobile and Emergency Services at Ministry of Health. Just before his appointment as Dean, he was consultant surgeon and Surgery Specialist Training Coordinator at the Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital which is a subsidiary of the LMMU. Having served in these various high level positions in the Health sector, Dr. Syakantu brings vast experience and skills to LMMU ranging from lecturing to strategic management and decision making. Being an ardent surgeon, teacher and team leader he is keen to see the university attain greater heights in academia, research and service excellence. As a publisher, he is passionate about building research capacity in upcoming academicians and researchers and his desire is to permanently entrench this culture in the School of Medicine and Clinical Sciences. He is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons for East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) who is determined to benefit LMMU to collaborations aimed at enhancing the profile

Dr. Syakantu has been a Chairperson for various Professional Committees and strategic technical working groups. He also has been a Board Member for Zambia Flying Doctors. He is a holder of Bachelor of Science in Human Biology (BSc. HB), Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) as well as Master of Medicine in surgery (M.MED – Surgery) from the University of Zambia (UNZA).He also has among others, a qualification in strategic management from Carl Bro Consultants, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Dr. Syakantu is optimistic that the School of Medicine and Clinical Sciences will grow from its current inaugural position to one of international acclaim and admiration in the next five years in academia and research.
